I will not go into the history of how Valentine's Day evolved, I'm sure you can get all the details by doing a search but I will share with you one particular legend which happens to be my favourite.

There was one particular Valentine who was imprisoned and who actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl, possibly the jailor's daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, he wrote her a letter signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today.

Although the truth behind the 'Valentine' legends is quite confusing, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and, most importantly, romantic figure. And so we have Valentine's Day, a particular day in which we send cards to our beloved and dear ones.

Unfortunately, the day is too commercialised as are other feasts which causes unnecessary pressure. My motto is to show your loved ones that you love them every day by making every day special, by making every day count, by appreciating each other more.

Making a 3D Decoupage card ~ Part 2

Preparing your card

Prepare your card by cutting out a 26 x 19cm piece of cardstock...choose a colour that will go well with your chosen 3D picture. Fold carefully down the middle of your card and score the fold to create the basic card on which you will build your 3D picture.

Assembling your picture

Once you have all the pieces of your selected design cut out (see Part 1), you can start by gluing the largest (full picture) design to the front of your prepared card.

Now you can build up each layer by taking the next design, seeing where it has to be placed and adding your pre-cut (or cut your own) double sided adhesive foam pads (square or circles), glue dots or silicone glue to stick the layers in place. I get mine from the hardware store or the Lira (Pound) stores.

The double sided tape in the example above refers to double sided foam tape.

Do not place the form pads too close to the edge of the picture. Peel off the paper from each pad and place your next picture carefully in place.

You will notice that each consecutive cut-out has part of the previous picture missing and the more pieces you add, the smaller they are – this is of course how the 3D effect is achieved. Keep layering your design until you have assembled the complete project.

Finishing Touches

You can achieve a more rounded and natural effect, for example when making petals, by curling the edges of the top layer (using a shaping tool, the back of your scissors or your fingers) before assembling your project. Wherever you notice white edges, you can cover these by rubbing the edge with a pencil, this way you will achieve a grey outline effect which will eliminate the harshness of the white edges. You could also varnish the finished project with a matt or glossy decoupage finish (you can buy this from a hobby store). This is ideal if you are framing the design. Some papers already have a glossy finish.

Here is the finished card, I'm afraid I had taken this some time ago and my camera was not what I use now so it is not very clear but it gives you an idea. I also used silver cerne relief (outliner) to outline the picture and create a framed effect.

Making a 3D decoupage card ~ Part 1

In the coming weeks I will be writing a series of how to make your own 3D Decoupage cards. So are you ready? Let's go...

The tools you will need include:

Scissors, Tweezers, printer paper, sticky foam pads (or silicone adhesive), double sided tape, glue stick, cardstock, craft knife, cutting board.

Tips for choosing your design and cutting

Choose your design from either your favourite 3D site (there are many to choose from on the internet if you type free 3d sheets) or you could even make your own (see 'Making Your Own Designs' later on in this series). You could also buy die-cut (press-out) or 'cut your own' sheets from hobby stores.

Let us assume you have decided to print your own so print out the designs you have chosen (from your search for free decoupage sheets on the internet) on printer paper that is slightly thicker than the normal everyday paper (I use 110g/m2).

I am including this cute "Personal Use only' Bear design by Finteys you could use to practice on...

Cut out each layer carefully using a good pair of scissors you feel comfortable with (I have a set of different scissors, some are pointed, some are curved at the edge and I also have safety scissors which I find are very useful). Do not cut into the paper but rather let the design guide you to move and turn the paper along with the cutting motion of the scissors.

You might also find a craft knife handy for cutting intricate and small designs – always use a good cutting board to cut on. A small pair of tweezers might come in handy when you have very small pieces to assemble.

A good tip here, especially if you have many layers, is to keep each layer separate – I put mine in a plastic folder where you can also identify each design by numbering it in sequence. This way it will be easier to see in which order they are to be assembled. Or, another way to recognize which piece comes next is to work your way from the largest piece to the smallest which will be the last piece you add.

If you are new to this, I suggest a simple design like an angel, a teddy bear like the one I posted or a plain flower with only a few simple layers.

I would like to extend my warmest seasonal greetings, although belated since my family and I were away over the holidays, and I do hope you all had a wonderful Christmas.

Pumpkin Carving Made Easy and Fun! ~Part 2~

If you have followed the first steps in getting your pumpkin ready, now you can start getting ready for the next step...

Carving your design.

Attach your own or printed design to the flattest side of your pumpkin by using thumbtacks or masking tape. **Tip** If your pattern is too big or too small for the pumpkin you chose, use a copy machine to enlarge or reduce the pattern size.

Once the pattern is in place, use a punch tool to outline each shape of your design. Poke the tool along the edge of each shape, spacing the holes about 1/8-inch apart. DO NOT press hard; all you want is a small indentation to transfer the outline.
Remove your pattern once you have made sure you have not missed any spots. Keep handy for visual aid.

If you have opted to draw your own or your kid's design directly on the pumpkin, work slowly as you copy each shape to avoid making mistakes.

In order that you can see the outline better rub some baking powder or flour over all your pin-point dot design so that the design stands out better. Now you can connect the dots with your sharpie or outliner and voila' you can see your design and it is ready for cutting.

Cutting the shapes

Use a long nail or punch to start your design thus making a starting point where you can insert the blade without cutting too much into the design. Turn and push until it’s all the way into the pumpkin, then remove. Do this every time you start a new shape (eyes, nose, mouth) in your design. This makes it easier for you to work your way through using your knife. Using this as your starting point now work your way through your design steadily sawing in an even direction.

Maintain light pressure and use a gentle sawing motion to cut through the rind. Steady the pumpkin with your free hand, which should be kept well away from the blade. When making curves, just slightly turn the blade. When making sharp corners, remove the knife and re-insert it at an angle.

To remove the pieces you cut, you may find it easier to push them out from the inside. If the cutout refuses to budge, check that all of your cuts meet at corners, and that the blade has cut all the way through the rind. In some cases, you may need to gentle pry out the shape with a butter knife. For larger pieces, you may want to cut them into smaller bits and remove them in sections.

Cleaning Up

For maximum effect of brightness, trim the inside walls of the cutouts so they are straight and even. Also remove stray fibers and strands around the inside edges of your shapes.

Safety First

Place desired candle inside or a pumpkin light which is safer, light and place lid back on top.

Light the candle and place it on a piece of tinfoil inside the pumpkin. Put the lid on. Let it sit a minute...
Remove the lid and there should be a smoke mark on it
Cut a vent in the lid where the smoke mark shows
NEVER LEAVE BURNING CANDLES UNATTENDED

Pumpkin Carving Made Easy and Fun! ~Part 1~

This post is meant for those who have never carved a pumpkin before or who have had difficulties in carving one. I am by no means a professional but have carved a fair number for our kids and have gathered a few tips to make this job easier and fun! So are you ready, let's go...

Pick your Pumpkin

Firstly, of course you need to buy a pumpkin! Choosing the right one is very important. I would suggest you find a round medium-sized one which sits well on the ground and is stable. It would look nicer and be easier to work with if it includes a bit of stem, especially if you will be removing the seeds through the top. Another feature to look for and which would help immensely when you get to the carving part is that your pumpkin has a gently curved face and is free of soft spots or breaks and blemishes in the skin.

OK so now you know which pumpkin to choose you can go out with your kids and make your choice at a supermarket or even a pumpkin farm if you know of one. This could even be an opportunity for younger kids to connect with nature and learn how pumpkins are grown. But even if you find yourself making a last-minute run to the supermarket or wayside stand, your family can have a blast picking the perfect pumpkin.

Assemble Your Tools

You will most probably find the basic tools you need among your common household items. These are:

A cutting tool: a sharp serrated knife will do but of course needless to say this is a job for you not your young ones. While doing this job you can get them involved in choosing a pattern from here or here. Or you can have them draw their own pattern if they are good at this.

A scraper: or large kitchen spoon for scraping out the seeds and pulp.

A punch: use a nail or awl to transfer a paper pattern to the pumpkin. Just place the paper on the side where you will carve the face (sticking with tape or pinning it down with thumb tacks). Trace by punching your paper pattern along the outline.

Pattern: whether you create your own design or use a ready made pattern, it's best to have your design on paper rather than draw it directly on the pumpkin. That way, you can change your design easily without trying to erase marks on the pumpkin. However, if you feel the design is simple enough you can copy the outline using a crayon (which you can wipe off if you make an error). This way you will not need to stick the paper to the pumpkin.
I suggest using one of the easier face patterns. As I said earlier, if your kids can draw why not let them design the face pattern and work around it. To make carving easier, the cutouts should be large, simple shapes with plenty of space between them. Besides the pattern link under A Cutting Tool (see above), here are two more faces this time from Kaboose for you to print. You can also search the web for "free pumpkin carving patterns" or "free pumpkin carving stencils."

Masking Tape: use this adhesive tape if you need to attach your pattern to the pumpkin.

Baking Powder (or flour) and outliner (or sharpie) : You can rub this powder over the holes you made earlier when you traced the outline with your punch (see above). It will make it easier for you to see the pattern when you outline it with your outliner or sharpie.

Table covering: To protect your work surface from mess and for easier cleanup, cover it with newspaper or an old table cloth.

A Bowl or Colander: for scooping the seeds/pulp into when cleaning out the pumpkin.

Cutting the Lid

Place your pumpkin on some newspapers. Cut a circle around the stem of the pumpkin, using your cutting knife making about a 6 inch wide circular lid. Make the cut at an angle by keeping the tip of the blade pointed toward the centre of the pumpkin. This creates a bevel and will prevent the top from falling through when you place it back on. Work slowly with an even sawing motion and use only light pressure.

Cleaning out the Pumpkin

This is the messiest and most probably the most enjoyable part of this project. It will be quite an easy job to remove all the seeds, strings and the rest of the pulp using a scraper or large spoon. Do not throw the seeds away...you can rinse them later and roast them.
Scrape some of the flesh from the inside so your pumpkin is about an inch thick all the way around (or at least wherever you’ll be carving). You can poke a straight pin through it to estimate the thickness. Save the flesh for making pumpkin pie or soups.

**Tip** Include a small notch in your lid. This will make it easier to replace it with the correct orientation.

This poinsettia was from last Christmas and the shadow only lasted a few minutes when the sun was setting from our window facing west...I thought it was a nice one to capture since it would not last...unfortunately neither has the poinsetta now with our hot and humid weather but at least I have the picture.

Our Next Fair is at Lejlet Lapsi in St.Julians

When: 6th June, 2011
Where: St.Julians Bay and Promenade
Time: 6.30pm ~ 12.30am

A Folk Festival used to be held in the times when the Knights were in Malta, with the Grandmaster organizing a grand feast for the Knights around Lapsi * to encourage them in whatever circumstance or encounters they had to face especially with the Turks.

From early afternoon, free wine and food would be distributed from the Spinola Palace Gardens and surroundings to all present including St.Julians residents as well as those who would come to the bay from B'Kara. This feast was extremely popular with the Maltese.

To bring this feast back to life, the St.Julians Local Council in collaboration with the Parliamentary Secretariat for Consumer, Fair Competition, Local Councils and Public Competition as well as with the Tourist Authority will be organizing Lejlet Lapsi. St.Julians Bay and all along the Promenade will be transformed into a Folkloristic Village.

There will be various stands of Maltese crafts and Maltese products. Banners and flags will decorate the area. Animators in the children's area will provide entertainment for the kids and there will also be Arts and Crafts, Bouncing Castles and other fun and games. Musicians playing traditional Maltese instruments as well as singers in costume will mingle with the crowds.

One of the highlights of this activity will be the Re-enactment of the time when the Grandmaster used to visit this location. Around 90 actors as well as horses and a canon salute will bring this episode to life. This colourful spectacle will start from Balluta square around 7.30pm where a regiment of soldiers will march towards Spinola Bay. I'll let the rest be a surprise for you should you be there!

You will be entertained with colour, music and so much more all through the evening which will come to its close with a spectacular show on the main stage set up in the bay where some of our best singers will give a rendition of great Maltese songs.

This is a great occasion for a great evening out with your family and friends.

* Lapsi is the feast of the Ascension, celebrated 50 days after Easter.

Celebrating my Birthday

This is the cake my daughter made for my Birthday,
a scrumptious angel food cake with strawberries and
cream...all I can say is I had to have two helpings : ) YUM!!!
It was a lovely, relaxing day spent with my family and
that is how I like it! Don't you love it when the family
don't let you into your own kitchen and they show you
what they can do! I thank God for these lovely years, for
my family who always make me feel great and with their help
I look forward to new beginnings and new adventures.

New items on our Craft Table by Shadow Scents

Hello everyone, as you know from my last post we were at the Spring Fair at San Anton Gardens this past weekend. I am sorry we did not see the crowds we had last year but I guess it was all due to the fact that there were many other activities in other towns and villages all on the same day.
Anyway, you may have noticed in my title I said 'our' craft table and that is because I am happy to say that my daughter has joined me in the world of creativity and has ventured into another sphere of crafting, this time in making her own candles, candle melts as well as hand blended perfume oils. These were quite a hit and many stopped by our stall when the scent of melting wax tarts tickled their noses and drew them closer. Some were also interested in the perfume oils which proved to be quite a hit. Also from the title you will notice the name of these new products is Shadow Scents. I love the colours she has come up with and the scents are heavenly.

Mother's Day 2011

Today Mother's Day will bring together mothers, daughters, sisters,
sisters-in-law, mothers-in-law, friends and families in more ways than one.

Although for many of us Mother's day is every day since it is a 24/7 job,
it is indeed in every little success or failure, in all ups and downs, and
with many tears and smiles that we celebrate our motherhood in the daily
happenings that bring us closer to our children and to one another.

We must not forget those who, although not natural mothers, are indeed
doing a mother's job beautifully and those include adoptive mothers,
relatives who are acting as mothers, teachers, carers and sisters in orphanages to mention a few.

For me Mother's Day is definitely every day as I see our children succeeding and persevering in their studies, in taking decisions, in everyday little acts of friendship with me, in showing their appreciation for what I and their Dad do for them...it is in the trust they show in us. Of course I love that extra little bit of recognition and attention and the way they show their appreciation in their gifts on this special day!

This is the first Mother's Day that I am missing my Mum since her passing was this year but I will try and dwell on all the good things she taught me and the lovely memories we made together when she was alive, this way I will celebrate her life.

May the bond that we feel with our children today strengthen with each day and with each experience that brings us closer to one another.

Easy Custard-filled tarts

These are the custard filled tarts my daughter and I made for Easter tea. They were easy to make since we bought the basic empty sweet tarts which we filled with yummy custard. If you try these, make sure your custard has cooled down before filling the empty cases. In fact we kept stirring the custard until it cooled completely not to let it form a hardened layer on top. It takes time but is worth the effort. We left it in the fridge to cool it further and then spooned it into the tartlets. The chocolate eggs in the picture were made by my daughter...she made halves first and then made a second batch into moulds which she topped with the first halves...very tricky yes, but the result was great! We grated some chocolate over some of the tarts. Needless to say it took us less time to eat these than to make them!

My new Beaded Bracelet

I made this early this morning just after breakfast and can't believe I made it myself! Yesterday I watched a tutorial for making beaded beads to use in making a bracelet. Actually I watched it several times but when I tried it, I was not too enthusiastic about it so I took what I learned from the tutorial and adjusted it according to what I thought would look good and what would sell too : )
I honestly never thought I'd make such sophisticated looking and complicated jewellery but I did!!! So never say never but try and try again! So here's another item to add to my Jewellery collection for my next Fairs. Thanks for looking : )

New Earring Designs

Here are my latest creations in earrings

which I am stocking up for our up-coming fairs in May and June.

The top picture shows my butterfly earrings

which come in my new range of Spring Simplicities

which feature butterflies, flowers and other

spring related charms.

All have co-ordinating beads to make a lovely pair

of dangle earrings which are very attractive

when they catch the light in their motion.

The picture above shows the earrings I made to add

and

Sandy Beaches

Each pair is unique, carefully made using

a hand wrapped wiring technique

and although I might use the same charms,

there is always variation in the beading and sequence of design.

Good Friday and Earth Day

By pure coincidence Good Friday and Earth Day came together this year. I have stopped to reflect about this, about how life and death come together. When Jesus went through his ordeal of suffering and death, He also gave us back the right to eternal life with Our Creator. So thinking of Jesus' death and suffering and then His Resurrection that gave us New Life fills us with Hope and hope brings life. When we think of our Earth and see the catastrophes happening everywhere, we might say to ourselves there is nothing we can do. But really there is lots we can do, if only every one of us did his little part our planet could be a much happier, safer and healthier place. We may not be able to stop disasters but every action, each word, every little bit on our part helps in making our Earth a better place. It is a pity to see so much lack of concern that many have for Creation. May we all do our part in changing our bad habits and see them die so that we can see a new Earth.

Lord as we celebrate this season of Hope and Life,

may we see the Earth richly blessed

with Peace and may the Resurrection Promise

fill our hearts with Love and Hope.

Fruit and Vegetable Festival

It is the time of year for outdoor spring activities and what better start

than to go to Fairs and Festivals with an exciting array of attractions

and yummy treats in beautiful surroundings.>

My recent craft show was at the Fruit and Vegetable Festival held in the Presidential Palace Courtyard on Sunday April 3rd. I am so glad my daughter urged me to attend as there was a great turnout and the day was lovely, in fact I think it was the warmest spring day so far.

My First Fabric Fall Swag

I have been cutting odd pieces of fabric into 2 x 6 inch strips for a few days

and today I finally put it all together into this window decoration for Autumn.

I think the effect is stunning, well worth the effort, although

my hand was a bit numb from tying all the knots!
Here is where I got my inspiration, great lady and wonderful blog...

Apples of Gold

You can tie the strips as close as you please. Ribbons or other decorative tie-ons can be added for extra effect.

Make sure you start off with extra string so that you have enough to make it hang nicely. I also made mine a double strand for added strength.

I suggest you start from the middle and work your way towards the edges, that way the colours will be even and you can measure better.

A Wire & Beaded Necklace

My Rosary Bracelets

You may be wondering 'What is a Rosary Bracelet?'
Well, when I heard of Beaded Rosary Bracelets, they were quite a novelty to me too. They have been around for some time and came into use as part of a person's jewellery to be worn with the intention of reminding oneself to pray. Many of us say we are always too busy but really, saying the Rosary takes up only around 10 to 15 minutes. We may say we don't even have so many minutes to spare...OK, how about 2 to 3 minutes, even waiting for a bus takes longer! So we can just pray one decade (one mystery) whenever we find those extra minutes. AND that is what these bracelets are for...as a reminder and to help us pray...besides don't you think they're pretty!

For anyone wishing to learn more about how the Rosary is prayed, click on the link at the bottom of this posting.

These bracelets are most often made with chain, but some are also made with cord, elastic, twine, flexwire or even memory wire. A rosary bracelet has a small crucifix and a small medal, which in my case I have left out but inserted a finding which allows you to add your own. Usually this is a miraculous medal and many already own one or more in gold or silver. There are ten Hail Mary beads and one Our Father bead. Most bracelets are about 7 1/2 inches in length, but they can be adjusted by adding or removing chain.

Since I have been teaching myself beading and beading techniques, I decided to try and make some. I used different coloured beads so that when anyone is praying the Rosary, one can think of different intentions with each Hail Mary while contemplating on a particular mystery of the Rosary.

By the way you don't have to be a Catholic to pray the Rosary and as a Catholic you do not need to pray the Rosary, but it certainly has many benefits and spiritual fruits.

September is a time of change, the weather is changing, days are getting shorter, children are getting ready to go back to school and all in all we feel there are winds of change which hopefully will take us towards a happier time of the year when temperatures are cooler and we more or less get into our 'routine' after the hectic summer months. For some of us this feels like a blessing while for others it means there is 'more to do' since the lazier days are coming to an end.

I have started a new line of products which are mostly beaded articles including among others an exclusive range of 'One of a kind' jewellery accessories. This is a new venture for me and I am very pleased with the results. I hope you will come see for yourselves.

Update 12.10 19/7/10: We have just come back from The New Choral Singers concert,
it was a totally wonderful performance, the choir was great and the
director so talented. We enjoyed every song especially the Maltese
favourite L-Imnarja which was performed for a second time after a
great final applause.
A very well planned and welcome change, especially that it is right in the middle of summer, was a short interval and free water and beer were served. The whole repertoire was well varied and appropriate to summer, indeed true to the concert title of Songs for Summer.

We are certainly looking forward to their next concert.

A Pilgrim following in St Paul's footsteps

Early around nine this morning as the skies sprinkled light showers, I set out with camera in hand, wearing a rain jacket over summer wear as it was quite warm, and walked to our nearby village of Balzan. Crowds were beginning to gather along the streets where Pope Benedict XVI was due to pass through on his way to the Granaries Square in Floriana to celebrate Holy Mass.

In this first picture you can see people getting ready to welcome the Pope.

And here is the Police escorting the Popemobile as people were waving flags and taking pictures while trying to get a good glimpse of the Pope waving and smiling at everyone.

And this is the closest photo I could take before Pope Benedict XVI

passed by, so I quickly clicked and then waved...

it was a special moment!

Now I realise that I saw him from quite close, in fact I think it's the closest I ever got to being near any Pope.

This is the third one I've been fortunate enough to see in real life,

(... hmm am I giving away my age here LOL!)

I have memories of seeing Pope Paul VI when I visited

the Vatican, then again my husband and I had travelled

many miles to see Ven Pope John Paul II when we lived in Canada

and we saw him once more when we came back to the island

and he had passed right beneath

our balcony on his last visit to Malta.

This has been definitely a very memorable day for all

Maltese and Gozitans and we will cherish the memory

for a long time to come.

Artisans Market during Valletta Day

Yesterday's Craft Fair went very well.

We were invited by the Malta Crafts Council in collaboration with

the Valletta Council and the Malta Tourist Board to take part in the

festivities of Valletta Day.

There were many participants, we had lots of people browsing and

admiring our work and thankfully, some were also buying : )

As you can see from the above picture, it was sunny (sunglasses) although cloudy,

hot (me wearing a light top) and windy (tablecloth flapping)!

Here is a close-up of my table.

The picture above shows my beaded accessories for

mobiles, keychains or purses. I was quite surprised and

pleased to have a customer returning and asking whether I had

any more with ladybird charms since the one she bought from me

at a previous sale was so very well liked. She bought two more!

These are the new additions to my table...my acrylic painted

watering cans which I decorated for Easter...these attracted quite a few people

who complimented me on them...and I sold a couple too : )

During the day I met one of my high school teachers, a nun whom I had not seen for several years, also a cousin again whom I had not met in a long time.

The Mayor of Valletta visited all the stalls and he stopped to chat for a little while with all of us.

A few other friends stopped by as well...it seems the market is quite the place to meet ~ how lovely!

My children came to help me again, we set out quite early and my husband also joined us after work...I guess this is becoming quite a family concern : )

By 3.30pm we were all set to go home, tired but happy and a little sunburnt!

Hmm...must make a note to pack some sunscreen along with my crafts next time!

I have been working on painting these watering cans throughout this past week. They are quite small, you could even call them miniatures so painting was a little bit more difficult but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Last week I gave them a coat of primer plus three coats of a basic colour so I could focus on the designs this week.

Here is a closer look.

I think they would look cute with an Easter egg on top!

In full Bloom

Our beautiful Hyacinths are now in full bloom,

the colours are out of this world,

the small flowers that make up each bloom so exquisite.

Its scent fills the air as if a perfume bottle has been left open.

It's a feast to the eye, so delicate yet sturdy.

Every time I look at it, I feel it calling to me to write some verses

on its beauty...maybe I will...

Hyacinths in bloom

Above is a picture of one of my hyacinths ready to bloom...

and here is one in bloom. I have never taken care of hyacinths before and I think they are beautiful flowers. The bulbs will bloom in future seasons with proper care. I have done some research on the net to learn more about the bulbs and the lovely flowers they produce. Funnily enough on the first page I found an article about Hyacinth Bucket (which she pronounces as Bouquet), the character portrayed by Katherine Patricia Routledge in Keeping Up Appearances. We always enjoyed that show and its re-runs : )

My husband bought me these three bulbs in a basket which I am keeping in my kitchen for the time being since there is good lighting there but I may transfer it to another room later on. Hmm, maybe I could use the flowers in full bloom for 'one of my Candlelight suppers' as Mrs Bucket would say LOL!

Artisans Market Valletta ~ March 6th 2010

It started off as a dull grey day with clouds promising rain, but my husband and I along with our son ventured out early and were in St.Georges Square by 8am. No tables had been set up as yet and we chose the spot that was actually the same one as I had during the Christmas Fair.

It was quite a chilly morning but we definitely prefer it to a hot day.
As soon as the set-ups, tables and chairs arrived and were duly distributed to the waiting artisans, everyone was happy to have their crafts displayed and set up so that by around 9am the market was set to go! We were by now happy to enjoy a cup of take-away steaming coffee while we waited for the crowds to arrive.
The turnout was pretty good, quite a good number of tourists as well as locals attended so it was a busy scene. One of my first sales was a decoupaged tealight my daughter helped me with and when she joined us later, she was happy to know it was sold although I secretly know the feeling of not wanting to part with something you made!

The above collage is made up of pictures my son took of my craft display and the one below (pics I took) shows the different trades and crafts that were taking part. Although sales were not as good as our Christmas Fair, yet I thoroughly enjoyed the experience especially getting to know the other artisans there.

We were very lucky that it did not rain, thank God, and around mid-day the sun came out and it was quite hot for about an hour or so! So with favourable weather, my family to help out, new friends, nice comments by people who appreciate handmade products as well as having the opportunity to sell my own crafts, what more could I ask?

I would like to thank the team at Malta Crafts Council for their continued help and support and for giving us the opportunity to display and sell our handiwork.

Flat Stanley visits my Craftroom

I have had an important visitor this week...Flat Stanley has travelled over the Big Pond to visit Malta and my family and he was sent on this great adventure by a very special young boy whose name is Matthew and whose Grandma is an online crafting friend of mine. Flat Stanley has visited my crafting room and with a little help (since the brush was almost as big as he is), he has also helped with decoupaging my glass products in readiness for a CraftFair this weekend.

We are working on a journal and some more pictures for Matthew's school project...what a great way to study...I wish we had teachers who thought of teaching this way back in my schooldays!

Flat Stanley is a great little 'boy', very well behaved and I thank Matthew for letting me help in this great project!

My First Christmas Artisans' Market

I am a little late in posting this I know but hey, better late than never, right : )

Above you can see my craft table at my very first Artisan's Market. This was a special occasion organised by the Malta Council of Crafts and which took place in the newly opened and renovated St George's Square opposite the Palace in Valletta.

These are pasta shell angel ornaments I made as Christmas tree decorations...some had magnets attached to the back to be used as fridge magnets and others had pins to be worn as brooches. At the back you can see my hand painted goblet candle holders.

Here you can see the angels again alongside my decoupaged Christmas plates.

In this last picture are some of my other angels and some decoupaged tealights.

We had to be there rather early to set up and the day started off being rather windy but soon the sun was out (as you can see from the pictures) and it turned into a beautiful day, sales were very good and my family was there to help out so it was really a fruitful and enjoyable day!

I can't believe I have not posted since the beginning of January! And we are almost mid-February! For one thing I have been busy with family, crafting, putting Christmas decorations away and for the longest time it seems trying to nurse a cold/cough that I just could not get rid of... I thought I was doing everything right, taking my meds, resting, staying away from the cold and yet it still took quite a while but here I am finally. I do hope my comeback means I am here to stay! Sorry I did not post and thanks to all who have been looking for me.

Family Under the Weather

My family and I have all been under the weather this past week, first our son came down with a mild cold, then our DD and I got this awful stomach virus which somehow we managed to pass on to my husband so it has been a sick bay these last few days. We had been getting ready for Christmas and I was happy to know we were kind of getting there early...we also had a painter lined up to do some painting for us before we put up our decorations. We waited for him for a whole week, he never turned up and kept coming up with all sorts of reasons and/or excuses. In the meantime we had our living/dining room furniture all covered and placed in one corner and everything else packed up!

One week of waiting was enough, we are putting everything in place, the job will have to wait and most probably we will have to get another painter.

As they say when it rains, it pours, it was raining this evening and we have our street being resurfaced so there is a terrible continuous noise from the machines. I am also so far behind on my crafts and I was hoping to get ready for my Christmas sale/exhibition next weekend. We are hoping things will settle down so we can get ready for Christmas.

As an on-line friend joked with me earlier today, she said, "I have heard a saying about the family that ??? together stays together but I think the word is PLAY".

It seems like I haven't been here for ages. Many thanks to those of you who have contacted me in some way or another to ask if I was OK. Well in a way yes I am quite alright now, but I had to deal with a health issue recently in our family and of course that takes priority over everything else. Thanks and praise be to God everything's fine now and we are slowly getting back to normal. Will try to pick up where I left off.
